I would suggest a KLX250. I own a 2018 and have really enjoyed it so far, the suspension is fart better than the XT and it is much closer to a "plated dirt bike". Its a little heavier than the XT but makes a good bit more power (19HP vs 24HP). The water cooled KLX will handle tight technical stuff much better as it relies far less on airflow
Go buy the 250 for the good deal it is and don’t look back. If you find yourself lacking power, you can do a big bore upgrade on that bike and have a 300 or even a 351cc. Put a 351 In my klx250s. It's a waste of time and money in terms of performance.

For me to choose between them it would be based on height. If you're a shorty, the Sherpa is the way to go. If you're taller and prefer a full size frame the KLX would be best. edit: If you're going to be doing more road riding the KLX has an edge as it is faster. I have a Sherpa, and love it, and would like a KLX.
